Acts 1

the king version

The former treatise I have made, O Theophilus, was[1] about[2]
all that Jesus began both to do and teach, 2until the day in which He was taken up,
after that He, through the Holy Spirit, had given commandments unto the apostles, whom He had chosen:
3To whom also He showed Himself alive after His passion by many infallible proofs, being seen by them for[3] forty (40) days,
and speaking of the things pertaining to the kingdom of God.

4And, being assembled together with them, He[4] commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, He says[5], “You[6] have heard from[7] Me; 5for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days hence.”

6When they, therefore, had[8] come together, they asked of Him, saying, “Lord, will You at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?”

7And He said unto them, “It is not for you to know the times or the seasons, which the Father has put in His own power. 8But you[9] shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit has[10] come upon you; and you[11] shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.”

9And when He had spoken these things, while they looked[12], He was taken up, and a cloud received Him out of their sight.

10And while they looked steadfastly toward Heaven as He went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel,11 who[13] also said, “You[14] men of Galilee, why do[15] you[16] stand gazing up into Heaven? This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into Heaven, shall so come in like manner as you[17] have seen Him go into Heaven.”

12Then they returned unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is from Jerusalem a Sabbath day's journey. 13And when they had[18] come in, they went up into an upper room, where abode, namely[19],
   Peter,
   and James,
   and John,
   and Andrew,
   Philip,
   and Thomas,
   Bartholomew,
   and Matthew,
   James the son of Alphaeus,
   and Simon Zelotes,
and Judas the brother of James.

14All these continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brethren.

15And in those days, Peter stood up in the midst of the disciples (the number of names together were about a[20] hundred and twenty), and said, 16 “Men and brethren, this Scripture must and[21] needs to be[22] fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit, by the mouth of David, spoke before concerning Judas, who[23] was guide to them that took Jesus. 17For he was numbered with us, and had obtained part of this ministry.”

18Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open[24] in the middle[25], and all his bowels gushed out. 19And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem, insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, The Field of Blood.

20For it is written in the book of Psalms:
     “Let his habitation be desolate,
and let no man dwell in it[26]”, [Psalm 69:25]
     and,
       “his bishopric[27][28] let another take.”[Psalm 109:8]
21
Therefore[29], from[30] these men who[31] have accompanied[32] us all the time that the Lord Jesus went in and out among us, 22beginning from the baptism of John, unto that same day that He was taken up from us, must one be ordained to be a witness with us of His resurrection.”

23And they appointed two: Joseph called Barsabas, who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. 24And they prayed, and said, “You[33], Lord, who[34] knows[35] the hearts of all men, show[36] which[37] of these two You have[38] chosen, 25that he may take part of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas by transgression fell, that he might go to his own place.”

26And they gave forth their lots, and the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was numbered with the eleven (11) apostles. [KING]

  1. Observations about "You" in #Acts1v8

But you shall receive power, after that the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses unto Me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

KJV: But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

In KJV, ye means the plural you. Notice how the plural-you (ye) and the singular-you were used:

    1. "You (plural) will receive power"
The promise of the Holy Spirit's infilling and power are for all of us Christians.

    2. "after that the Holy Spirit has come upon you (singular)"
But the infilling of the Holy Spirit is an individual work, not corporate or through a group. One can be filled with the Holy Spirit all alone by himself - just him/her and Jesus.
o You don’t have to belong to a group in order to be filled by God's power; you just have to be a part of Jesus' kingdom, His family.

    3. "and you (plural) shall be witnesses unto Me"
We are all witnesses of Jesus' reality in our respective
    Jerusalems
    Judeas
    Samarias
And unto the unreached and less reached parts of the earth.

This is for you – pointing at the person in the mirror.

The Curse of the Thief

I n the middle of audit week, our company accountants decided not to show up. As it turned out, they embezzled some money. What struck me the most was that the people who did it were not strangers; they were like mothers and aunts. We saw them almost every day, smile at them, laugh with them, and made plans together. As part of the management team, we ate out and had a friendly good time. It was heartbreaking to realize that the people in the news for some criminal activity had the same profile as those that I had warm and cuddly relations with. But loyalty goes up. My love for God supersedes any other relationship. I feel sad, yes, but I have no inkling to cover for them. If anything, I am upset because I was this close to them, and yet, clueless. My colleagues and I were mixed emotions. On one hand, we felt betrayed. The suspects were like family. We confided in them and planned activities with them in all sincerity and warmth. But maybe, just maybe, they were truthful and sincere...

Bishopric and Episkopé: The Ministry of Visitation

The KJV word is bishoprick , which is now archaic in spelling. Most Bible translators didn’t use the modern spelling ‘ bishopric,’ and that, for a good reason.   #Acts1v20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: “Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell in it.”, and, “His bishopric, let another take.”   A quick google search shows that bishopric means: the office or rank of a bishop. ·      a district under a bishop's control; a diocese.   But looking closely at the Greek word, episkopé, reveals a deeper meaning: a visiting, an overseeing [Strong's].   Here's the kicker: bishopric k is not a desk job; it's fieldwork.   An excellent, Spirit-filled bishop or pastor performs the act of visitation. How does one effectively "oversee" a flock? By being with them, by being among them. When God calls one to be a pastor of a people, the expectation is not like that of a manager who stays in the offic...

Our FATHER Can Easily Bless Us With A Baby

Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife Sarah will have a son!” So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?” And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’ Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and Sarah will have a son.”   [ Genesis 18:10, 12-14 BSB]   Nothing Is Too Hard For The Lord   This is the first time that God declared the statement “Nothing is too hard for the Lord,” and it involved having a baby. The Lord repeated Himself in this same way to Mary concerning Elizabeth’s pregnancy, and it was also about having a baby. (see Luke 1:36-38) It’s amazing to know that God measured His ability in this way – in the manner of granting babies. The Lord does not treat it lightly when we laugh at what He is able to do. For God ...

Death and Destruction

Our FATHER Confirms His Baby Promise

But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”   Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” [ Genesis 15:2-4 BSB]   Right here and now, we remind ourselves again that having a baby is all dependent on God's grace and mercy. We cannot make any of this happen on our own. In this stage of Abram's life, he has no child, and no parental obligation. His nephew, Lot, had just parted ways from him. It could have been Lot as an heir apparent. But with Lot gone, Abram was then left with a non-relative, who was next in line to be an heir prospect.   Abram was willing to adopt Eliezer (or his son) and treat him as his own. Adoption, in itself, is good and godly. The whole Bible is ...

John 2

the king version And on the third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2  and both Jesus and his disciples were called to the marriage. 3  And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus says * to Him, “They have no wine.” 4  Jesus says * to her, “Woman, what have I to do with you? My 1 hour has 2 not yet come.” 5  His mother says * to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures 3  apiece. 7  Jesus says * to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8  And He says * to them, “Draw some out now, and carry 4   it to the governor of the feast.” And they carried 5 it. 9  When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made into wine, and knew not from where 6 it was (but the servants who drew the...

Being On God’s Side: The Nonpartisan Obedience And Submission of The Elect

My choice of candidate is only as good as when I vote. My vote is only as good as when it is counted. But when the tally comes, my choice is irrelevant – God  decides  who is king.   Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. (Romans 13: 1 NASB)   Our future does not depend on the person who gets elected, but on the One who sits on the Throne. If God has already decided, then why do I need to vote? This sounds like the clay who talks back to the Potter, “Why did you make me this way?” [see Romans 9:19-20] Let’s admit it: Though we vote according to our conscience, our conscience is formed by information made available to us. We can only know so much about a candidate, but God knows all things. In choosing, our sense of compatibility and personal preference are at work. We like a certain candidate because we feel that we like something about them, or w...

The Ministry

Is Received, Not Assumed. Hebrews 8:6 But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. Even our Lord Jesus received it from the Father. The Ministry is given, not taken. I will wait for my turn.
