Genesis 14

And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of nations, that these made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela, which is Zoar. All these were joined together in the vale of Siddim, which is the salt sea. Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

And in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer, and the kings that were with him, and struck the Rephaims in Ashteroth Karnaim, and the Zuzims in Ham, and the Emins in Shaveh Kiriathaim, and the Horites in their mount Seir, to Elparan, which is by the wilderness. And they returned, and came to Enmishpat, which is Kadesh, and struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazezontamar.

And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim; against Chedorlaomer the king of Elam, and with Tidal king of nations, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against five. 10 And the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and fell there, and they that remained fled to the mountain. 11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their food supply, and went their way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.

13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram. 14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen (318), and pursued them to Dan. 15 And he divided his men against them, he and his servants, by night, and struck them, and pursued them to Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. 16 And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people. 17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king's dale.

18 And Melchizedek, king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine; and He was the Priest of the Most High God. 19 And He blessed him, and said,

“Blessed be Abram of the Most High God,

Possessor of heaven and earth;

20 and blessed be the Most High God,

who has delivered your enemies into your hand.

And he gave Him tithes of all.

21 And the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me the persons, and take the goods for yourself.”

22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom, “I have lifted up my hand to the LORD, the Most High God, the Possessor of heaven and earth, 23 that I will not take - from a thread even to a shoe latchet - and that I will not take anything that is yours, so that you should not say, ‘I have made Abram rich.’ 24 Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.”

The Curse of the Thief

I n the middle of audit week, our company accountants decided not to show up. As it turned out, they embezzled some money. What struck me the most was that the people who did it were not strangers; they were like mothers and aunts. We saw them almost every day, smile at them, laugh with them, and made plans together. As part of the management team, we ate out and had a friendly good time. It was heartbreaking to realize that the people in the news for some criminal activity had the same profile as those that I had warm and cuddly relations with. But loyalty goes up. My love for God supersedes any other relationship. I feel sad, yes, but I have no inkling to cover for them. If anything, I am upset because I was this close to them, and yet, clueless. My colleagues and I were mixed emotions. On one hand, we felt betrayed. The suspects were like family. We confided in them and planned activities with them in all sincerity and warmth. But maybe, just maybe, they were truthful and sincere...

Bishopric and Episkopé: The Ministry of Visitation

The KJV word is bishoprick , which is now archaic in spelling. Most Bible translators didn’t use the modern spelling ‘ bishopric,’ and that, for a good reason.   #Acts1v20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: “Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell in it.”, and, “His bishopric, let another take.”   A quick google search shows that bishopric means: the office or rank of a bishop. ·      a district under a bishop's control; a diocese.   But looking closely at the Greek word, episkopé, reveals a deeper meaning: a visiting, an overseeing [Strong's].   Here's the kicker: bishopric k is not a desk job; it's fieldwork.   An excellent, Spirit-filled bishop or pastor performs the act of visitation. How does one effectively "oversee" a flock? By being with them, by being among them. When God calls one to be a pastor of a people, the expectation is not like that of a manager who stays in the offic...

Death and Destruction

are never satisfied, and neither are human eyes.  (Proverbs 27:20 NIV ) People will never stop dying and being destroyed, and they will never stop wanting more than they have. (NCV) Share your burbles here. Image courtesy of Victor Habbick at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

The Goal of Bible Reading

I diligently read the Bible  to know how to come to Jesus. John 5:39-40 You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me,   yet you refuse to come to me to have life. (NIV) Share your burbles here. Image courtesy of Lightstock .

The Ministry

Is Received, Not Assumed. Hebrews 8:6 But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. Even our Lord Jesus received it from the Father. The Ministry is given, not taken. I will wait for my turn.

As for me

far be it from me that I should sin against the Lord by failing to pray and teach the way that is good and right.  (1 Samuel 12:23) Share your burbles here. Images courtesy of ChristArt .

Guided, Advised, and Watched Over

I will let the Lord guide me along the best pathway for my life. I will heed His advice, and feel safe, knowing that God is watching over me with a loving eye. (Psalm 32:8) The LORD says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you. (NLT) I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you. (NIV) Share your burbles here. Image courtesy of Lightstock .

God is working in me

for me to desire and perform His will,  which is my destiny, for His glory. Philippians 2:13 For it is God who is working in you, enabling you both to desire and to work out His good purpose. (HCSB) It is God who produces in you the desires and actions that please him. (GW) God is working in you to make you willing and able to obey him. (CEV) for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose. (NIV) because God is working in you to help you want to do and be able to do what pleases him. (NCV) -=w=- The Holy Spirit is a true gentleman. He first inspires me to do His will, and then He empowers me to accomplish it. What a sweet deal! He does not force himself, He makes me want to do His will! As long as I am doing the will of God, I will always end up victorious. Come hell or high water, I will come out on top for God's glory!  When I persevere to do the will of God, I become unstoppable...

Encouragement In Death

I do not grieve like those who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18   I believe that: 1) Jesus died and rose again 2) God will bring with Jesus those who have died in Him 3) Jesus will come back 4) the dead in Christ will rise first 5) then those living for the Lord will experience Rapture And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with t...

The Battle For A Baby

There is no question that God wants every married couple to have a baby. Let there be no doubt about it; it is God’s will for you to have a baby.   By and by, these timeless truths get challenged as the months and years go by and we still don’t have a baby. After some years into our married lives, we begin to ask, “Why are we not pregnant yet?” Our hearts and minds begin to wonder and wander. We are then made aware of some serious information like: - This auntie never had a baby - This cousin had a miscarriage - This one has a cyst and/or myoma…   And the list went on.   We then realize that we are related to a lot of family and relatives who have medical conditions that challenge reproductive health, fertility, and conception. In what seems to be a sad fate, we share a similar genetic weakness.   We begin to worry; we start to doubt. But the good news is God’s promises are not dependent on our circumstances . It is entirely all on God’s ...
