But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”
Then the word of the LORD
came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from
your own body will be your heir.” [Genesis
15:2-4 BSB]
Right here and now, we
remind ourselves again that having a baby is all dependent on God's grace and
mercy. We cannot make any of this happen on our own. In this stage of Abram's
life, he has no child, and no parental obligation. His nephew, Lot, had just
parted ways from him. It could have been Lot as an heir apparent. But with Lot
gone, Abram was then left with a non-relative, who was next in line to be an
heir prospect.
Abram was willing to adopt
Eliezer (or his son) and treat him as his own. Adoption, in itself, is good and
godly. The whole Bible is filled with substantial evidence that adoption is
also an act of faith. The Lord, in His Sovereignty and Divine Providence, also
blesses this righteous act of parental responsibility, and it is also a means
to fulfill God’s baby promises.
However, in Abram's case,
the Lord intervened; adoption was not God's specific
plan for him. It’s not always like that, and we don’t decide when. In the
Father’s graciousness, He then confirmed His baby promise through him and his
wife: A child born to you will continue your name...

Father God,
You are so gracious and kind,
and You keep on giving us blessings. We are forever grateful.
But we also admit that all these blessings do not satisfy
until You give us the gift of a baby. Oh Father, our hearts are crying out,
"What good are Your blessings if we don't have a baby?"
Please confirm, oh Lord,
Your baby promise to us. Please take away this cry from our hearts for lack of
a child. May the Word of the Lord be spoken to us and declare Your baby promise
over our lives.
Thank You, Lord, for You
will come and confirm Your baby promise.
In
Jesus' name,
