Acts 4

the king version

And as they spoke[1] unto the people,
the priests,
and the captain of the temple,
and the Sadducees
came upon them, being grieved that they taught the people, and preached through Jesus the resurrection from the dead. And they laid hands on them, and put them in hold unto the next day, for it was now evening[2].But by now[3], many of those who[4] heard the Word believed, and the number of the men was about five thousand (5,000).

And it came to pass on the next day[5], that their
rulers,
and elders,
and scribes,
and Annas the high priest,
and Caiaphas,
and John,
and Alexander,
and as many as were of the family[6] of the high priest,
were gathered together at Jerusalem. And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power, or by what name, have you[7] done this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them, “You rulers of the people, and elders of Israel,if we this day are[8] examined on[9] the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he is made whole, 10 be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by Him does[10] this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is

‘the stone which was set at nothing[11][12] by[13] you builders,
which has[14] become the Head of the corner.’ [Psalm 118:22]

12 Neither is there salvation in any other, for there is no[15] other name under Heaven given among men, by Whom[16] we must be saved.”

13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marveled; and they took knowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 14 And beholding the man who[17] was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it.

15 But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, 16 saying, “What shall we do to these men? For that indeed a notable miracle has[18] been done by them is manifest to all those who[19] dwell in Jerusalem; and we cannot deny it. 17 But that it spreads no further among the people, let us strictly[20] threaten them that they speak to no man in this name any longer[21].

18 And they called them, and commanded them not to speak at all nor teach in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said unto them, “Whether it be right in the sight of God to listen[22] unto you more than unto God, you judge; 20 for we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.”

21 So when they had further threatened them, they let them go, finding nothing as to[23] how they might punish them, because of the people; for all men glorified God for that which was done, 22 for the man was above forty (40) years old, on whom this miracle of healing was shown[24].

23 And being let go, they went to their own (company[25]), and reported all that the chief priests and elders had said unto them. 24 And when they heard that, they lifted up their voice to God with one accord, and said, “Lord, “You[26] are[27] God, who17 have[28] made Heaven and Earth, and the sea, and all that is in them, 25 who by the mouth of Your[29] servant David have said,

‘Why did the heathen rage,
and the people imagine vain things?
26 The kings of the Earth stood up,
and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord,
and against His Christ.’ [Psalm 2:1-2]

27 For of a truth,
both Herod,
and Pontius Pilate,
with the Gentiles,
and the people of Israel,
were gathered together, against Your Holy Child Jesus, whom You have anointed, 28 to do whatever[30] Your hand and Your counsel determined before to be done. 29 And now, Lord, behold their threats[31], and grant unto Your servants, that with all boldness they may speak Your Word, 30 by stretching forth Your[32] hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of Your Holy Child Jesus.”

31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken - where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the Word of God with boldness.

32 And the multitude of those who19 believed were of one heart and of one soul; neither anyone[33] of them said that any[34] of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had all things in[35] common. 33 And with great power the apostles gave witness to[36] the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and great grace was upon them all.

34 Neither was there any among them that lacked, for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold, 35 and laid them down at the apostles' feet. And distribution was made unto every man, according as he had need.

36 And Joses, who by the apostles was surnamed Barnabas, (which is, being interpreted, “the Son of Consolation”), a Levite, and of the country of Cyprus, 37 having land, sold it, and brought the money, and laid it at the apostles' feet. [KING]

The Curse of the Thief

I n the middle of audit week, our company accountants decided not to show up. As it turned out, they embezzled some money. What struck me the most was that the people who did it were not strangers; they were like mothers and aunts. We saw them almost every day, smile at them, laugh with them, and made plans together. As part of the management team, we ate out and had a friendly good time. It was heartbreaking to realize that the people in the news for some criminal activity had the same profile as those that I had warm and cuddly relations with. But loyalty goes up. My love for God supersedes any other relationship. I feel sad, yes, but I have no inkling to cover for them. If anything, I am upset because I was this close to them, and yet, clueless. My colleagues and I were mixed emotions. On one hand, we felt betrayed. The suspects were like family. We confided in them and planned activities with them in all sincerity and warmth. But maybe, just maybe, they were truthful and sincere...

Bishopric and Episkopé: The Ministry of Visitation

The KJV word is bishoprick , which is now archaic in spelling. Most Bible translators didn’t use the modern spelling ‘ bishopric,’ and that, for a good reason.   #Acts1v20 For it is written in the book of Psalms: “Let his habitation be desolate, and let no man dwell in it.”, and, “His bishopric, let another take.”   A quick google search shows that bishopric means: the office or rank of a bishop. ·      a district under a bishop's control; a diocese.   But looking closely at the Greek word, episkopé, reveals a deeper meaning: a visiting, an overseeing [Strong's].   Here's the kicker: bishopric k is not a desk job; it's fieldwork.   An excellent, Spirit-filled bishop or pastor performs the act of visitation. How does one effectively "oversee" a flock? By being with them, by being among them. When God calls one to be a pastor of a people, the expectation is not like that of a manager who stays in the offic...

Our FATHER Can Easily Bless Us With A Baby

Then the LORD said, “I will surely return to you at this time next year, and your wife Sarah will have a son!” So she laughed to herself, saying, “After I am worn out and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?” And the LORD asked Abraham, “Why did Sarah laugh and say, ‘Can I really bear a child when I am old?’ Is anything too difficult for the LORD? At the appointed time I will return to you—in about a year—and Sarah will have a son.”   [ Genesis 18:10, 12-14 BSB]   Nothing Is Too Hard For The Lord   This is the first time that God declared the statement “Nothing is too hard for the Lord,” and it involved having a baby. The Lord repeated Himself in this same way to Mary concerning Elizabeth’s pregnancy, and it was also about having a baby. (see Luke 1:36-38) It’s amazing to know that God measured His ability in this way – in the manner of granting babies. The Lord does not treat it lightly when we laugh at what He is able to do. For God ...

Being On God’s Side: The Nonpartisan Obedience And Submission of The Elect

My choice of candidate is only as good as when I vote. My vote is only as good as when it is counted. But when the tally comes, my choice is irrelevant – God  decides  who is king.   Every person is to be subject to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God. (Romans 13: 1 NASB)   Our future does not depend on the person who gets elected, but on the One who sits on the Throne. If God has already decided, then why do I need to vote? This sounds like the clay who talks back to the Potter, “Why did you make me this way?” [see Romans 9:19-20] Let’s admit it: Though we vote according to our conscience, our conscience is formed by information made available to us. We can only know so much about a candidate, but God knows all things. In choosing, our sense of compatibility and personal preference are at work. We like a certain candidate because we feel that we like something about them, or w...

Our FATHER Confirms His Baby Promise

But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me, since I remain childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” Abram continued, “Behold, You have given me no offspring, so a servant in my household will be my heir.”   Then the word of the LORD came to Abram, saying, “This one will not be your heir, but one who comes from your own body will be your heir.” [ Genesis 15:2-4 BSB]   Right here and now, we remind ourselves again that having a baby is all dependent on God's grace and mercy. We cannot make any of this happen on our own. In this stage of Abram's life, he has no child, and no parental obligation. His nephew, Lot, had just parted ways from him. It could have been Lot as an heir apparent. But with Lot gone, Abram was then left with a non-relative, who was next in line to be an heir prospect.   Abram was willing to adopt Eliezer (or his son) and treat him as his own. Adoption, in itself, is good and godly. The whole Bible is ...

John 2

the king version And on the third day, there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2  and both Jesus and his disciples were called to the marriage. 3  And when they wanted wine, the mother of Jesus says * to Him, “They have no wine.” 4  Jesus says * to her, “Woman, what have I to do with you? My 1 hour has 2 not yet come.” 5  His mother says * to the servants, “Whatever He says to you, do it.” 6  And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three measures 3  apiece. 7  Jesus says * to them, “Fill the waterpots with water.” And they filled them up to the brim. 8  And He says * to them, “Draw some out now, and carry 4   it to the governor of the feast.” And they carried 5 it. 9  When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made into wine, and knew not from where 6 it was (but the servants who drew the...

The Ministry

Is Received, Not Assumed. Hebrews 8:6 But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, and it is founded on better promises. Even our Lord Jesus received it from the Father. The Ministry is given, not taken. I will wait for my turn.

Encouragement In Death

I do not grieve like those who have no hope. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18   I believe that: 1) Jesus died and rose again 2) God will bring with Jesus those who have died in Him 3) Jesus will come back 4) the dead in Christ will rise first 5) then those living for the Lord will experience Rapture And now, dear brothers and sisters, we want you to know what will happen to the believers who have died so you will not grieve like people who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and was raised to life again, we also believe that when Jesus returns, God will bring back with him the believers who have died. We tell you this directly from the Lord: We who are still living when the Lord returns will not meet him ahead of those who have died. For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God. First, the Christians who have died will rise from their graves. Then, together with t...
